Other detectors take inspiration from hemoglobin, a protein in blood cells that delivers oxygen to tissues and can be hijacked by carbon monoxide to starve the cells of oxygen. These units have gels that soak up carbon monoxide, changing their color as they do. A light sensor tracks the gel’s color to indicate the level of CO nearby. Regardless of their methods, all detectors are subject to minimum sensitivity and alarm characteristics set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety standards.
