There are five primary types of insulation, each suited for different situations and climates. The type of attic insulation you choose will help you maximize energy efficiency and save money on energy bills.

Blanket – Made from fiberglass, natural and synthetic fibers, mineral wool and more, blanket insulation comes in rolls or pre-cut panels known as batts. It’s cost-effective and easy to apply.

Rigid foam board – Consists of foam plastics such as polystyrene and polyisocyanurate; comes in rigid boards that are typically 4’x8′. It has high R-value and is relatively easy to install, but requires careful measuring and cutting to ensure a tight fit between rafters. It can also absorb water and lead to mold and mildew if it’s exposed to moisture.

Cellulose – Made from recycled paper and treated with fire retardants; can be blown or sprayed into attics. It has a very high R-value and is eco-friendly, but can settle over time and lose effectiveness. Mineral wool is a good alternative to cellulose and has similar R-value, but is more resistant to moisture.

Spray foam insulation – Liquid that expands into a foam upon application, filling every crack and gap. It has a very high R-value, acts as an air barrier and seals leaks, and is moisture-resistant. It is more expensive than other types of attic insulation and requires professional installation due to chemical handling.
